Electrodiagnostic Testing (EDX)
In order to better understand the conditions affecting your health, your doctor may suggest you have one or more types of EDX testing. An electrodiagnostic (EDX) test is a simple diagnostic procedure that can help identify the source and extent of any pain you may be experiencing. This type of exam will tell your doctor if you have any damage (neuropathy) to your nervous system by measuring how specific nerves in your arms and legs respond to mild stimulation.
The following symptoms may benefit from EDX testing:
Neck and shoulder pain
Lower back pain
Leg or foot pain
Weakness in the extremities
Numbness or tingling
Pins and needles
Loss of feeling
Radiating pain into the extremities
Injuries, as well as diseases such as diabetes, can affect nerves and muscles, causing weakness, numbness and pain. EDX testing is able to evaluate muscle and nerve function. The tests take less than an hour and are done by a licensed technician or physiatrist (a specialist trained and certified in this area). Both tests are minimally invasive and virtually painless.
Small electrode patches are placed on the skin and register gentle impulses sent by the testing device. These responses provide a measurement that can be used to customize your treatment.
